OUR WORK - GIRLS’ EDUCATION

Education is a fundamental right; girls’ education contributes towards achieving global goals.

AGE–Sierra Leone supports girls to learn, thrive and be change drivers.

In keeping with the organization’s central tenet, AGE–Sierra Leone provides school materials such as shoes, bags, exercise books, pens/pencils, uniforms etc., and organizes remedial classes to improve their knowledge in English Language and Mathematics to ensure success in their pursuits of high-quality education.

PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT, MENTORSHIP AND COUNSELING

Girls are given psychosocial support to help manage their mental, emotional and social wellbeing. We get to know their thoughts, fears, feelings, goals and dreams through one on one discussion. Individual counselling session, singing and dancing, arts and crafts, drama performances are organized to help girls overcome their challenges

SKILLS TRAINING

Our programs include empowering girls with skills training. Most of the girls in communities are expected to help generate income for their poor families. This forces them to engage in the arduous task of carrying small trees/samplings (locally called fence sticks) to distant destinations and selling them for their livelihood. AGE-Sierra Leone undertakes to encourage girls to learn different types of skills for sustenance.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Awareness raising sessions are conducted in communities on Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV), child labour, early marriage, HIV/AIDS, domestic slavery etc. Small financial aids are granted to mothers of age-supported girls, as most are small holder farmers, to assist with girls’ upkeep. We’ve also been distributing used clothing to age-supported girls and their community members.

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

As a way to raise funds, AGE-SL runs a social enterprise. Cosmetics, women’s clothing, foot wear for women and men etc., are sold. Proceeds from this are used to directly support the education of girls.
